Open Question: Is Prednisone a good treatment for allergies?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Hi i am an 18 year old male and have had allergies since i was about 7. Yesterday i went to a new general practitioner that one of my mom’s friends recommended. (dr. Kouji Takase)I went into the clinic and signed a few papers then he gave me a shot for the allergies, a flu shot, prescribed me lodrane 24d, and gave me a bottle of 5mg Prednisome. One of my friends who just happends to have took this drug before for allergies told me that it made him suffer severe side-effects and he wished he never took it at all. That kinda scared me so i have not taken it yet. The doctor told me to take 8 on days 1-2, 6 on days 3-4, 4 on days 5-6, and 2 on days 7-21 all after breakfast. I just want to know what are the side-effects of this drug and overall is this a good treatment for allergies?

Open Question: Food riddle please answer?

i need the link that you got it from …..thnks

Man became aware of me around 700 BC. Since ancient times I have been used as a food and as a medicine. For many years, I was used mainly in religious ceremonies as well as to embalm the deceased. I have long been known to have a multitude of healing powers with everything from relieving sore throats, allergies, to healing wounds. I taste great with peanut butter. I have as many antioxidants and phytochemicals as spinach, apples, oranges or strawberries. My main purpose is a great source of energy; athletes use me to maintain a consistent blood sugar levels. I also have cancer-preventing and anti-tumor properties. I have been used for years as an antiseptic for treatment of ulcers, burns and wounds. I am also a good source of vitamin B2, B6, iron and manganese. You must use me in the raw form; heat destroys all my health and nutritional benefits.

Open Question: Severe Chronic Asthma, Any Help?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I have had severe chronic asthma for as long as I can remember. I use about 5 different inhalers daily, am taking 2 preventative oral pills, and am having to take breathing machine/nebulizer treatments up to 8 times a day at home. I used to be hospitalized so often that the doctor recommended I just buy my own nebulizer…this has prevented hundreds of hospitializations. I cannot sleep more than 2 hours at a time without waking up coughing, struggling to breathe, and/or sinus congestion. This occurs EVERY DAY. I don’t know if I have ever gotten “a full night’s sleep” in my life. I am not exaggerating. All of this medication and suffering is wearing me out. I am about at the end of my “rope”. My allergist thought I should try Xolair, but I cannot afford it, the drug company won’t help me, and my insurance will not cover it. I want to know if anyone out there has suffered like this. What has helped you? Anything? I am feeling very depressed and suicidal. I have tried almost every medication possible, but would be willing to try something again if it has really made a difference in your asthma. I really need help. My husband and I even moved out of the country to a location that was “ideal” for asthma and allergies…this did not help. I don’t know what else to do. I am on so much medication I can’t even work. It gives me stomach aches and head aches, makes me very very jittery, and makes me irritable. I can’t do it anymore. I don’t know what else to do…neither do the doctors (except tell me to try Xolair with an out of pocket cost of $2000/mo! I would need 2 shots because my asthma is so severe). Anyway….I really appreciate your help!

Open Question: For a western medicine dr please?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Patient admitted 8 weeks ago for wheezing and sob,
Myocardial unit x 3 days ruled out congestion from chf and pneumonia and called it allergy related congestion
dc’d with xopenx 1.25 mgs q 4-6 atc / guafeninsin bid wheezing resolved with regular treatments
Nursing home dr lowered xopenex to .63 prn
Wheezing returned for a few weeks but within last week of few weeks, became labored breathing with little effects from xopenex Instead of starting prednisone as the xopenex website reccommends, she lowered tube feedings to 65 ml per hour to reduce fluids in the body and gave 1 day of lasix 40mg(even though patient was ruled out of chf congestion at hospital) A week later 10 days of prednisone started which relieved labored breathing and wheezing and need for regular xopenex treatments. TOday 16 days after reduced calories(1600 a day to 1300 a day) and 3 days post predisone patient is wheezing heavily 4 hrs post xopenex and has developed her reoccuring cellulitis which was resolved with the 80 ml per hr diet. Argggh Please help family with advice.

Open Question: What are the causes/symptoms/dangers of an enlarged infant heart?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

My11 month old daughter who has allergy induced asthma but very rarely needs breathing treatments was having cough attacks, runny nose, fever, trouble breathing, wheezing, etc so when she wasn’t getting better i took her to the ER last night.. They examined her and took x rays of her chest.. After being there for 4 hours and having to repeat the x rays twice the doctor told me that they didn’t find pneumonia they found an enlarged heart.. They didnt believe it had anything to do with her bronchitis but felt we were lucky to find it this way.. She is nearly 1 yr old, 27lbs(she’s a chubby girl), walking since 9 months, very active, and has never shown signs of anything serious. Her blood pressure at the ER while holding completely still was 144/99.. I’m very worried and am unable to contact her doctor till Monday. Can anyone give me any information? Also, they perscribed her antibiotics, atrovent for her breathing machine, a steroid, an anti inflamatory, and Lortab.. I don’t understand the need for all of these meds especially a narcodic in an infant. Please help.

Open Question: Can anyone help? severe allergy to carpet?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

My partner and i have just moved into the home of our dreams, but one major problem has arisen. Since moving in my bf has been having very serious allergy problems, he has had to be hospitalised at least once a week since moving here and the doctors have him on both anti histamines and steroids. Due to the prolonged use and high dose of the steroids the Drs have said he needs to come off them, but the allergy is putting a huge strain on his heart and white blood cell count is extreemly high.
We live in rented accomodation so cant change the carpets as they are very very expensive and dont think landlord would allow us to replace them with a cheaper alternative.

I am hoovering regularly and this does help but he is still very very uncomfortable and he is still very dependant upon the steroids, without them he will certainly end up back in hospital.

Does anyone know of a spray or simular treatment to prevent the wool particles from leaving the carpet? or a way to stop them from getting in the air.

We have 7 kids between us and they are constantly running about, which i think is kicking up more particles into the air etc.

Any help or advice would be gratefully recieved.
